Tree ferns prefer shaded and sheltered spots. They will grow in full sun if they are also well watered (ideally using auto irrigation) but ideally if you can place them in a sheltered and part shaded spot they will grow a lot better.

Do Tree Ferns Prefer Sun Or <a class=

They do love shelter from the wind, the fronds will be bigger and wider if they don’t have to battle with the wind all day long. Think about where they are naturally growing in the wilds of Tasmania, they will be in dense jungle / forest / woodland, sheltered from both wind and direct sunshine all day long.

Tree ferns need to stay moist, this is the most important thing to remember, and getting auto drippers setup will be the best way for you to ensure a problem free tree fern. I have mine set for about a 5-7 minute water twice a day from spring to autumn, and then I scale it back through the winter as it gets colder and more rainy here (in the UK) anyway.

The Majestic Fern Tree

The fern tree, also known as the tree fern, is a fascinating and beautiful plant that adds a touch of elegance to any garden. With its large, feathery fronds, the fern tree creates a lush and tropical ambiance. These ancient plants have been around for millions of years and can grow to impressive heights, up to 20 meters or more. Fern trees are commonly found in rainforests and moist, shaded areas, where they thrive in the cool and moist environment.

One of the unique features of the fern tree is its ability to reproduce without the need for flowers or seeds. Instead, they produce spores on the underside of their fronds, which are then dispersed by wind or water. This method of reproduction is one of the reasons why fern trees have survived for so long and can be found in various parts of the world. Their distinct appearance and ancient lineage make fern trees an enchanting addition to any botanical collection or garden.

Can tree ferns grow in full sun?

Tree ferns are typically woodland plants that thrive in shaded areas, making them best suited for partial or dappled sunlight. However, it is important to note that certain species of tree ferns, such as the Dicksonia Antarctica, have been known to tolerate some exposure to full sun, as long as they receive adequate moisture and protection from drying winds. Therefore, while tree ferns generally prefer shade, there are some species that can tolerate full sun under certain conditions.

In summary:

  • Tree ferns prefer part shade to full shade
  • Tree ferns prefer to be protected from the wind and the elements
  • Keep watered, and keep moist all year
  • Feed with soluble tree fern feed once a week through the growing season when the new fronds are starting to grow (from about early April ish)
  • Shelter from the wind will result in longer and wider fronds and lush growth.
  • Ideal growing conditions will also widen the crown, which will help with bigger frond growth the next year also.

The majority of tree ferns prefer partial shade, although a few can tolerate full sun. The climate needs of the species vary, with some requiring a frost-free area and others tolerating light to medium frost.

Do tree ferns actually like full sun?

Tree ferns generally prefer partial shade or dappled sunlight rather than full sun exposure. While they can tolerate some periods of direct sunlight, prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can scorch their delicate fronds. Therefore, if you are planning to grow tree ferns, it is important to provide them with a location that offers some protection from direct sunlight.
