Description
A unique variant of the common Bamboo that is moderately sized, fast growing with an arching upright growth pattern. The structure of the bamboo is slender and straight along with arching canes that are covered with evergreen leaves throughout the year. The green leaves form dense clumps at the top that gives the body an elegant appearance.
The average height of around 6-8 ft makes it suitable for growth in small gardens or even large pots. Being an upright straight plant, it only spreads to around 1.5 metres only. However, if you want to keep it more compact, it can be pruned to be kept at a lower height.
As it grows quickly, and with a beautiful evergreen foliage makes it an ideal plant for hedging and screening. The bright and shiny foliage can generate a dense privacy screen that can help you. Rufa is considered to be one of the hardiest Fargesia’s which has foliage that won’t curl up even during the time of intense winters. This is the reason why it looks great throughout the year.
This bamboo can grow practically everywhere with very little care. It can grow equally well in sunny positions, as well as in partially shady areas if soil conditions are met. Rufa does not like dry soil but can grow in almost every kind of well-drained, moist and fertile soil. Therefore, if you plan to grow them even in pots, you should make sure that the pots are large enough to withhold a substantial amount of water to let the plant thrive fully.
Though easy to take care of, Bamboos are specifically targeted by some bugs such as mites, mealybugs, scales and some aphids. Some bugs feed on the lower side of the leaves and makes them drop-off or turn yellow. Similarly, there are spider mites that create veils of silky webbing on the leaf undersides and cause stippling or yellowing. However, they can be easily controlled by cutting off infected leaves immediately once the infection is noticed. You can also try and control it by spraying plants with a forceful blast of water. Insecticidal soaps can also treat any kind of infections.
