Description
Veitch’s bamboo for UK gardens
This bamboo belongs to Magnoliopsida class and Poaceae family. It is a clump forming bamboo with very lean canes. Its leaves are well known for their colour changing feature as the weather changes. The leaves are very broad which remain glossy and green throughout summer. However, leaves dry out from edges and turn to pale brown during winter months.
Sasa veitchii is available in 2 liters pot. The fully hardy cane remains upright thus making it an excellent container specimen. This garden bamboo is capable of growing in full sun or partial shade. It is proficient of reaching a height of 2.5 meters and a spread of 4 meters within 10 to 20 years. It looks excellent in a pot as a single plant or it can be used for screens/hedging or at roof terrace. Place somewhere you can see, as it is a beauty! The lush foliage will look extremely fresh in spring as soon as new canes appear.
The plant can safely be classified as evergreen because the main part of leaves remain dark-green in all seasons. Many people who have interest in gardening say that Sasa veitchii is very easy to care for. It should ideally be planted in fertile, moist, well-drained, and humus-rich soil. It should never be planted in dry soil in full sun. Experts have told that Sasa veitchii can grow equally well in clay or sandy soil. It grows fast therefore, it should be planted in a large container or its roots should be surrounded by a non-perishable root barrier. Regular pruning will also ensure best looks of stems and restrict unnecessary spread.
