Our favourite Heuchera’s
Heucherella ‘Gold Zebra’
Previously known as Heucherella ‘Golden Zebra’. The stark colouring may remind you of Coleus but these are hardy plants with larger leaves. The bold colours and feathery edged foliage makes for what some may consider garish, others dazzling.

Heucherella’s
Many of the Heuchera and Heucherella varieties are very similar as you can see from the two leaf images. They are grown for there often very bright and colourful evergreen foliage covering a vast range of colours. Whilst they do flower you probably wouldn’t buy them for this reason. There is no other plant that offers such a wide and diverse range of foliage colouring and patterns.
Outstanding leaf colour
The contrasting yellow and red colouration of this Heucherella ‘Gold Zebra’ will brighten any shady spot. Prefers shade to partial shade and enjoys more moisture compared to Heuchera.
It produces white flower in June and July but the real reason you buy this plant is for it’s foliage. Red almost Burgundy centres with yellow to green edges and looks far from retiring.
Heuchera ‘Cajun Fire’
Looking for something in red, this drought tolerant variety can be placed in full sun or partial shade. ‘Cajun Fire’ is a Heuchera with red leaves that change colour with the seasons. In spring when it is in growth the foliage is red and as summer progresses turn dark maroon to almost black and back to maroon in autumn.
Like most Coral Bells this is mound forming with white flowers on short stems over red to dark red foliage depending on the season. As the name suggests it can take the heat and prefers it on the dry side.
This would look great planted with other bright green contrasting foliage Heuchera plants or to complement other more variegated red or varieties with other shades of red.

Heuchera ‘Sweet Tart’
Heuchera ‘Sweet Tart’ has bright lime green leaves and is both vigorous and compact. They will grow well in our UK climate and are equally at home in a shady spot, in a pot or even indoors as a houseplant.
These are one of the new longer flowering breeds producing pink flowers on short stems. As the flowers are numerous yet small having contrasting coloured flowers to the leaves make them stand out more. The cerise to almost pink white flowers stand out well against the almost neon green foliage and will last from spring until autumn.
Heuchera generally prefer shade to semi-shade areas and being on the drier side. ‘Sweet Tart’ from the ‘Little Cutie’ series is one of the smaller more compact Heuchera’s that were new for 2013.
If you are new to these plants then you need to know that they provide fantastic year round colour with many varieties changing colour with the season. They do flower but they are more famous for their foliage.
