Description
Yucca filamentosa is native to the south-eastern United States and is a much under-rated and under-used arid plant with highly architectural foliage, thus making this an essential plant for the exotic garden especially for poor sandy soils. It is clump-forming plant growing up to 1.5m tall with rigged, stiff, dark blue-green leaves up to 75cm long, margined with distinguishing curly white filamentous threads, which gives the plant it name ‘filamentosa’.
Dramatic flowering spikes up to 3m tall are produced, bearing myriads of pendulous bell-shaped white flowers that are often tinged green, from mid-summer to late autumn. Much loved by bees.
It prefers a dry sunny spots, and is very much at home in dry gardens, rockeries and associates will with other drought tolerant plants. It is also excellent for coastal areas and exposed situations. It is also excellent as a pot or container plant that thrives on neglect!
