Rose of Sharon always puts on a great display and this cultivar is no exception! From late summer into autumn the showy mauve-blue flowers bring an exotic feel to your garden with their tropical colouring. As the name suggests, Hibiscus syriacus 'Purple Pillar' has a uniquely columnar habit that sets it apart from other hardy Hibiscus.
This variety of Rose Mallow is often praised for its undemanding nature and bushy foliage, but these desirable qualities pale into insignificance compared to the hardy shrub's remarkable flowers. Hibiscus syriacus 'Purple Ruffles' gets its name from its purple-red blooms, each of which comprises two or three layers of delicate petals. The plant is free-flowering from August to October, ensuring that the patio containers and borders in which it grows remain eye-catching well into the autumn. Height: 3m (9'10); Spread: 2m (6'7).
Creating an exotic garden here in the temperate climate of Britain is no easy task, but can be achieved. Canna 'Tropicanna Gold' is one plant that looks extremely tropical, but grows fine in the UK. It has large jungle type leaves, and between June and October large, opulent, tangerine-orange flowers bloom on sturdy, upright stems. Indian Shot Plant likes a sunny position and damp soil, so planting near a garden pond, or in well watered planters is ideal. In autumn the tubers can be lifted and stored in a frost free place, such as the shed, and re-planted the following spring. Height: 150cm (60). Spread: 50cm (20).
