Phyllostachys Bissetii is a vigorous, dense, clump-forming bamboo variety, native to Sichuan China but now actively cultivated in other regions including the UK and USA. Its cold hardy nature is what makes it adaptable for growth in climates with much lower temperatures from its natural habitat.
This bamboo can tolerate temperatures as low as -26 degrees Celsius and when the root is effectively mulched against frost, it can tolerate temperatures as low as -31 degrees Celsius. It is one of the earliest plants to recover from the frost and will grow even in poor soil conditions.It grows as a spreading clump of dark green canes or culms; hence it is often a great choice to create privacy screens in gardens. There is an abundance of narrow, lance-shaped, mid green leaves.
